You are going on a trip along the French coast. Which car is better to rent for this trip: front-wheel drive, rear-wheel drive, or four-wheel drive?
When planning a trip along the French coast, every tourist asks the following question: «Should I go to the Mediterranean coast or the Atlantic coast?” According to statistics, the majority of vacationers still prefer the first option because of the azure coast, the stifling heat, the possibility of meeting a celebrity and many other things. As paradoxical as it may seem, it is possible to spend a family vacation in these places.
And on the Atlantic coast? It’s much cooler there and there are plenty of holiday destinations, from Aquitaine to Normandy. Moreover, once in Corsica, you’ll be able to enjoy the incredible nature of the region. As you may have already noticed, the French coastline has a wide variety of holiday options to offer travelers. That’s why it’s very important to choose the car that best suits your needs. First of all, we’ll talk about the driving range.
Front-wheel drive cars: convenience and economy
Front-wheel drive cars therefore have a number of advantages and disadvantages. First of all, they weigh relatively little, which means that you can consume less fuel and travel further. Secondly, such a car has better traction than a rear-wheel drive car. Finally, if you are new to driving, you will be pleasantly surprised by the ease of driving a front-wheel drive vehicle.
However, it should be noted that alongside the positive aspects, there are also negative aspects. For example, these cars have difficulties moving on gravel and on slippery roads; they are difficult to drive at high speeds. Furthermore, if you are traveling with your family and heavy luggage, keep in mind that it will be difficult to keep the car moving.
Rear-wheel drive cars: driving dynamics and driving pleasure
Most of the time, the rear drive is installed on quite powerful cars, and trucks are also equipped with such a system. There is nothing surprising about this, because this system allows large cars to have the necessary control, fast braking, and a primary acceleration that is no less fast. In other words, it is possible to afford very dynamic driving.
However, the owner of a rear-wheel drive car must be prepared for the fact that in winter they will not be able to cope with the ice and snow. The wet roads will also cause problems with grip.
Vehicles with all-wheel drive: safety and versatility
What is the difference between a four-wheel drive car and, for example, a rear-wheel drive car? It’s simple: in the first case, the vehicle is equipped with two cardans and a transfer box, designed to transmit power to all wheels. The cardan is a mechanism necessary to transmit the torque from the gearbox to the drive axle (or axles) of the car’s wheels.

It should be noted that today, all-wheel drive systems can be either four-wheel drive (automatic switching between two and four wheels) or partial drive (you can activate and deactivate the all-wheel drive as you wish). A car with all-wheel drive can easily carry heavy loads, tow trailers, etc. Moreover, the car can be easily used in nature, where there are many unpaved roads, mud, rocks, etc. If you decide to travel along the French coast in winter, you will not be afraid of thick snow and the need to climb hills. All of this is not difficult for this type of car.
However, you must take into account that buying or renting such a car will cost more than the previous options. Moreover, due to the increased weight of the transmission and a whole range of additional parts, the car consumes much more fuel.
