Our Family Tour of Europe, summer 2021
Hello travelers!
Last summer you could follow our journey in Europe live on social media, and it was time to write an article to tell you about the preparations for this trip. Two years ago, despite Covid, we were able to travel to Greece very easily, but last summer was very complicated! We didn’t start preparing for our summer vacation until very late because everything was out of our budget; just in Greece, where we had been a year earlier, the prices had multiplied by 3! We therefore decided to take a tour of Europe because comparing the prices of plane tickets was very interesting. To give you an idea, we paid about 600 euros for a plane ticket for 4 people.
Here is our itinerary from Nice: We flew to Amsterdam, then to Copenhagen, then headed to Prague and finally we took the train to Berlin.
We traveled with cabin luggage only, which allowed us to save a lot of time at the airports because we didn’t have to check in for carry-on luggage. We traveled for 12 days and stayed 3/4 days in each city. That’s enough for the capitals we already knew. We were delighted to visit these countries in the north of Europe in the middle of summer, far from the heat of our southern France! I’ve listed the activities we enjoyed and that the children loved:
Amsterdam
The first step of this trip, Amsterdam is only 2 hours by plane from Nice. This destination has been a favorite of the children. We loved the NEMO science museum; it is incredible and we spent at least 2/3 hours there. We took the opportunity to visit our favorite neighborhood in Jordaan; there are tons of beautiful boutiques, cafes and trendy restaurants. The children loved the NDSM neighborhood; getting there is super easy; you just have to take the free ferry right behind the train station. Of course we went to the FoodHallen where we could taste all the culinary specialties of the world!
Finally, our hotel Okura was extraordinary with great attention to detail for the children, such as balloons, macarons, games, a super fun treasure hunt, and the icing on the cake: an enormous swimming pool!
We had the Iamsterdam card which allowed us to travel for free, discover the Rembrandt Museum, the NEMO Museum, take a cruise on the canals, in short, an extremely interesting map for saving money.
Copenhagen
After 3 days in Amsterdam, we headed to Copenhagen in 1h30 by plane. We love this city so much and we loved re-discovering it in the summer.
The children loved the amusement park more than anything else. TIVOLI, We spent a few hours and a few months there, and then they ask when we’re going back!
We stayed at the Andersen hotel, opposite the Absalon hotel (of the same group) in the area near the Tivoli garden; a truly wonderful hotel in terms of the welcome, the decor of the rooms, the comfort, and the breakfast. We took the opportunity to rent bicycles directly at the hotel to get around the capital.
The program for these 3 days in Copenhagen includes: the famous port of Nyhvan but this time we didn’t take the cruise, tour Christiana, cycling tour to the little mermaid, discovery of culinary specialties in Torvehallerne, shopping, long walks to observe the way of life of the Danes… In short, a real treat this getaway!
Prague
New stage of this road trip towards the capital check: Prague. This city wasn’t a favorite of the kids, compared to Amsterdam and Copenhagen which are hyper-friendly cities; it’s true that the locals were a bit less friendly in Prague. The kids still loved the history of the city, the castle, the Spanish synagogue, the Jewish cemetery, and strolling through the alleys of the old town.
Berlin
And finally to finish this trip in Europe, our last stop was Berlin where we were going to meet some friends. We took the opportunity to visit the spy museum which is really great for children. We were staying in the Prenzlauerberg district, a super cool neighborhood with great vintage shops and ultra cool cafes. The kids loved cycling on the famous track of the old Tempelhof airport and we loved the Biergarten!
We used the card Welcome Card Berlin to get discounts on activities.
It was a very interesting cultural trip; we talked a lot about history, we were able to visit a lot of museums, and with curious children it’s a real treat! We ate really well everywhere; our guide Thomas had found great food spots for us as usual!
