Las Casas del XVI, the ideal hotel to stay in Saint Domingue
I had the opportunity to visit these 6 unique «casas» during my trip to Spain. trip to the Dominican Republic and I literally fell in love with it. Here everything is all about luxury, tranquility and voluptuousness. That nicely sets the scene for Las Casas del XVI…
I present to you Casa del Pozo, Casa del Diseñador, Casa del Arbol, Casa de Los Mapas, Casa Macoris and Casa Antillana. When you walk through the door of each house, you feel as if you have been transported to another time, the time of the first explorers who came to discover the New World.

The first thing that surprised me was the tranquility of the place. You feel completely disconnected from the outside world and firmly out of time. My attention immediately turned to the decor, which is both elegant, refined, and contemporary, without detracting from the unique architectural style of these colonial houses built almost 500 years ago. Big kudos for this beautiful and painstaking renovation…

But the real highlight of Las Casas del XVI is the lush, colorful patios at the center of each house, veritable oases of freshness where it’s pleasant to have breakfast and rest after a nice walk through the historic neighborhood of Saint Domingue, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The rooms
In total, Las Casas del XVI has about twenty rooms of luxurious comfort, about three per house, which makes it truly a boutique hotel on a human scale. There are three types of rooms: the Royal Suite at the casa del Desiñador, the luxury room with a king-size or queen-size bed, and another luxury room with 2 queen-size beds this time.
The little extras

A hotel in the heart of the colonial district of Saint Domingue
During your stay in Dominican Republic, If you choose to spend the night in Saint Domingue, don’t miss the must-see and must-do attractions! The capital is full of treasures… Within walking distance of the Las Casas del XVI hotel.
Saint Domingue was the gateway to the New World in the 16th century. That’s why the historic center of the capital is probably the oldest neighborhood on the American continent.
Here are my must-see and must-do things around the hotel in Saint Domingue:
- Enjoy the atmosphere in Parque Colon Square: there is the statue of Christopher Columbus in the center
- Calle del Conde with its restaurants, bars and shops
- The Cathedral of Santa Maria la Menor
- The Museum of the Royal Houses
- The Alcazar de Colon, the house built for Diego Colon, Christopher Columbus's son
- Calle de la Damas
- The ruins of the San Francisco monastery. Don’t miss going there on Sunday evening; there’s music and atmosphere, the ideal place to meet Dominican friars.
- Go back to a Colmado (a kind of neighborhood grocery store, a popular bar) to see the popular atmosphere of the neighborhoods. And don’t leave without trying the Mamajuana (a local alcoholic drink)
- Head to Mercado Modelo market and lose yourself in the small alleys; you’ll stumble upon quite unusual stands.
- Attend a baseball game or watch a training session at one of the many stadiums (it’s the national sport!)
- When you say Dominican Republic, you say music! Enjoy the atmosphere at the El Sartén bar and dance the bachata or the Merengue
Want to continue the journey? Head to Sublime Samana in Las Terrenas.
If you want to combine discovering the Dominican Republic from a cultural and historical perspective in Saint Domingue with this time a «special beach» destination in equally luxurious accommodation conditions, head to the Sublime Samana hotel.
The Sublime Samana, This is my other favorite «hotel» of this trip to the Dominican Republic and it really lives up to its name…
This is the first time I’ve discovered such a luxurious resort with very high-quality services. Ranked as a Small Luxury Hotel in the World, Sublime Samana has all the ingredients to appeal to couples on a honeymoon.
My favorites:
– The hotel lobby
– The immense and long swimming pool, surrounded by Balinese beds, that runs through the resort to the Coson beach
– The hotel’s spa
– The large suites
– The beauty of the beach at sunset
– The two restaurants that offer local cuisine.
– Absolute silence… Amazing for a resort in the Dominican Republic!
