You will find all my favorites in this article and must-see and must-do attractions in Karlsruhe, Baden-Baden and Freiburg

Visiting Karlsruhe

I start my stay by discovering the city of Karlsruhe! Here are my favorites:

  • Karlsruhe is bike-friendly : yes, everyone here rides a bike!
  • Visit of Château de Karlsruhe and its large park. The ideal place to do a little morning jogging or have a little picnic for lunch.
  • Alter Schlalchthof The ideal neighborhood for those looking for a little alternative atmosphere. It is an area that was once an abattoir and has been transformed into a creative and entrepreneurial space.
  • Have a drink at P10-Citybeach, A beautiful rooftop popular with students, located right in the heart of the city with a view of the roofs of Karlsruhe
  • Make a passage to Durlach, I really liked the lively atmosphere and the old architecture of the neighborhood.
  • And then take the funicular to the top Tumberg, the ideal place to dine and enjoy a magnificent sunset over the entire city (restaurant: Anders Auf Dem Turmberg)

Visiting Baden-Baden

Change of scenery, I continue my stay with a stop in Baden-Baden. Here are my favorites:

  • The city center, chic and elegant! Take a look around Café König, a real institution.
  • A digestive walk at the « Lichtentaler Allee«A lush and flowering park of 3km long in the heart of Baden-Baden
  • Continue by visiting the Frieder Burda Museum, the Staatliche Kunsthalle, the city casino (which is worth a look), and the Trinkhalle.
  • Then go to the Point Panoramique As you walk through the alleys of the old town, the view is breathtaking and really worth a look.
  • An essential stop on the « Rose Society Garden » a magnificent park located a 15-minute walk from the city center, where one can admire nearly a hundred varieties of roses.
    Entrance fee: 1€ / person
  • Les ruins of the castle of Baden-Baden. It can be accessed on foot after 45 minutes of walking. One can enjoy a beautiful view of the city, the Black Forest and the Rhine Valley.
  • Looking for relaxation? The city is known for its spas, especially the SPA of Caracalla, one of the most renowned.
  • Just like in Karlsruhe, in Baden-Baden you can enjoy an exceptional sunset from the terrace of the hotel. Merkur Mountain, It is accessible by cable car. If you are a fan of extreme sports, you can also go paragliding there. It is possible to dine at the top of Merkur Mountain, at the restaurant Mercurial nebula.

Visiting Fribourg

And for the final stage of this trip in Baden-Württemberg, head to Freiburg, surely my favorite stop of the trip! Here are my favorites:

  • The first thing to do is to get lost in the alleys of the old town, starting your walk from Münsterplatz, The cathedral square, where many events take place such as the Wine Festival (winemaker meet-ups), not to mention the traditional food/flower market that takes place every day except Sunday. Fans of slow food will be delighted! There are plenty of local specialties to try (the grilled sausage). On this square you simply cannot miss the Historical department store (Historical merchant house) in red color, a marvel.
  • Pass through the ancient gates of the old city: Schwabentor and Martinstor
  • As you stroll around, you will notice many small streams who are crossing the city. They are called the Bächle. And yes, water is a source of life and animates the city a lot. The little ones go on little boat trips when the big ones take a long walk along its small streams in the summer evenings to have an aperitif. It’s really convivial!
  • If you want to get a little higher, head to Schlossberg, The castle hill from which you can enjoy the sunset while sitting on the terrace of a Biergarten. On the other side of the hill you can even see some vineyards (rather unlikely in the center of the city).
  • Enjoy the student atmosphere on campus place of the former Synagogue. Just a few steps from the square is the very contemporary university library, which contrasts greatly with the architecture of the old city.
  • Augustinerplatz It is also very popular with young people; there is a lively atmosphere, and you can admire the old colorful buildings of the square.
  • Want some fresh air? Take a short morning walk along the Dreisam river
  • Don’t miss the chance to visit the famous blue bridge from Fribourg, it's worth a visit 🙂
