1. Discover Jemaa el-Fna Square, the historical heart of Marrakech

It’s impossible to visit Marrakech without passing by the famous Jemaa el-Fna square, the true living heart of the city for centuries. Listed as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage, this square was once a gathering place for merchants, storytellers, and travelers from all over Morocco. Today, it remains the soul of Marrakech.

I especially like stopping there at different times of the day. In the morning, the atmosphere is calmer and perfect for observing local life. It’s also impossible to resist the famous freshly squeezed orange juices, sold on the small stands in the square — simple, delicious, and for me, a real ritual every time I visit.

But it’s especially in the evening that Jemaa el-Fna becomes magical. As night falls, the square transforms completely: musicians, traditional games, food stalls and entertainment fill the space in a unique, almost theatrical atmosphere. You settle in, observe, and let yourself be carried away by the incredible energy of the place.

However, here are some tips to enjoy the experience in a relaxed way:

  • Some women offer henna without warning, especially to tourists: it is better to politely refuse if you are not interested, because they then ask for money; ;
  • Avoid taking photos of animals (especially monkeys or snakes). Owners almost always demand payment after the photo; ;
  • As in any very touristy place, just keep an eye on your belongings.

Despite these few precautions, the Jemaa el-Fna square remains, in my opinion, an essential experience in Marrakech. It is a place where one fully feels the energy of the city, between ancient traditions and the Moroccan daily life.

I like to spend a few minutes there without necessarily trying to see everything or do everything; I simply observe the scenes unfolding around me: the Moroccan families gathering together, the children playing, the smells of spices floating in the air, and the light that slowly changes as the evening progresses.

Over time, I realized that Jemaa el-Fna isn’t really something to visit… it’s something to be experienced. It’s a place where you get a sense of Marrakech’s pulse, where every passing moment is different, and where you always leave with the impression of having lived a unique moment.

My 15 must-see things in Marrakech

2. Admire Marrakech from a rooftop at sunset

If there is one experience I absolutely recommend in Marrakech, it is to take the time to climb onto a rooftop at the end of the day. Seeing the medina from the rooftops, with the golden light enveloping the city and the call to prayer echoing in the distance, remains for me one of the most magical moments of a stay in Marrakech.

Throughout my travels, I have tried out several rooftops that I love and where I almost always return every time I visit.

Kabana It is undoubtedly one of my favorites for its bohemian atmosphere and its incredible view of the Koutoubia. People come here for the cocktails as well as for the relaxed atmosphere, perfect after a day in the souks.

Another must-visit address: Momo, an elegant and lively rooftop bar, ideal for having a drink in the late afternoon or dining in a chic but relaxed atmosphere. The place perfectly blends modernity and Moroccan spirit.

I also really like it El Fenn, an iconic place in Marrakech. Its rooftop offers a magnificent panoramic view of the medina and the Atlas Mountains when the weather is clear. The atmosphere there is more peaceful, almost out of time, perfect for a moment suspended by the setting sun.

My advice: arrive about an hour before sunset to fully enjoy the evolution of the colors on the city. That’s when Marrakech really becomes magical.

3. Getting lost in the souks of Marrakech, an experience not to be missed

Walking through the souks of Marrakech is one of my favorite moments in the city. Behind every alley there is a new atmosphere: hanging lanterns, colorful carpets, smells of spices, workshops of artisans, and small boutiques filled with treasures.

Through my travels, I’ve learned to no longer look for my way, but simply to let myself be guided by the atmosphere. It’s often by going away from the most frequented routes that one discovers the most beautiful addresses.

My favorite place remains without hesitation The Place des Épices. The atmosphere there is more mellow and bohemian, and I love stopping there to take the time to watch the artisans at work. It’s also the ideal place to bring back a personalized souvenir of Marrakech.

Among other things, you will find some beautiful customized hats, embroidery, made to order, usually around 10 euros, as well as beautiful Customized Moroccan baskets, Perfect as souvenirs or summer bags. I especially like choosing the colors and watching the object take shape before my eyes: a unique and authentic souvenir of the trip.

As everywhere in the souks, bargaining is part of the game, always with a smile and in good spirits. That’s also what makes the experience lively and typically Moroccan.

4. Sleeping in a riad in Marrakech, an experience in itself

Staying in a riad is an essential part of the experience in Marrakech. Behind large, often discreet doors lie true havens of peace, far from the hustle and bustle of the medina. That’s actually what I love most about the city: passing from the chaos of the souks to a quiet patio, surrounded by plants, with the soothing sound of a fountain.

Throughout my travels, I have had the chance to discover several riads and hotels, each with a different atmosphere depending on the experience sought.

During my last stay, I discovered the Riad XO, a riad with a sunny and contemporary style that I particularly loved for its terraces, its cocooning spaces, and its warm atmosphere, ideal for both friends and families.

I also loved the elegant atmosphere of the Riad Le Saadien, An intimate and charming address, perfect for enjoying a quieter Marrakech while still being close to the must-see attractions.

Another beautiful discovery: Nalos House, a private and refined place where you immediately feel at home, with a neat decor and a very relaxing atmosphere.

The Riad Olema & Spa It is ideal for a wellness break, with a real spa area perfect after a day in the medina.

For a more luxurious experience, the mythical Royal Mansour It remains an exceptional address in Marrakech, a true masterpiece of Moroccan architecture where every detail is thought through with incredible precision.

Finally, I had a real crush on The Villa Nomad, A house full of character with a gentle and elegant atmosphere, perfect for an authentic stay in the heart of the city.

Choosing a riad in Marrakech completely changes the experience of the trip: you don’t just sleep somewhere; you live a real immersion in the Moroccan way of life.

5. Visit the Majorelle Garden, a must-see in Marrakech

It’s impossible to visit Marrakech without discovering the famous Jardin Majorelle, one of the most emblematic places in the city. Created in the 1920s by the French painter Jacques Majorelle, this botanical garden was originally a true artistic project combining exotic plants, architecture, and vibrant colors. After a period of neglect, it was saved in the 1980s by Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Bergé, who restored the place and helped make it one of the most visited sites in Morocco today.

What I particularly love about this place is the contrast between the hustle and bustle of Marrakech and the almost meditative calm of the garden. The famous Majorelle blue, the giant cacti, the ponds and shaded walkways create a soothing atmosphere, perfect for taking a break during a day of sightseeing.

After discovering the garden, I always like to prolong the moment. Café Bousafsaf, Located inside the site, nestled in a shaded area surrounded by vegetation, it is the ideal place to slow down the pace and still enjoy a little of the magic of the place. The café takes its name from Jacques Majorelle’s first house in Marrakech and is accessible only to the garden’s visitors, giving it a particularly peaceful atmosphere. I love stopping there to drink a fresh orange juice or a coffee in the shade of the trees, away from the hustle and bustle of the medina.

🎟 Prices 2026 (indicative)

Tickets must now be reserved online in advance, Because the time slots are limited and the garden often gets full, especially during the high season.

👉 My advice: book a slot early in the morning to enjoy the garden in a quieter atmosphere and take some nice photos.

Visiting the Majorelle Garden remains an essential experience for me during my first stay in Marrakech, both for its history and for the unique beauty of the place.

6. Visit the Yves Saint Laurent Museum in Marrakech

Located right next to the Majorelle Garden, the Yves Saint Laurent Museum in Marrakech This is a visit I highly recommend to extend your exploration of the place. Inaugurated in 2017, this museum pays tribute to the famous French couturier who had a very strong connection with Marrakech, a city that profoundly influenced his work and creativity. The architecture of the building, inspired by the textures and fabrics of haute couture, is already worth a visit in its own right. Inside, you discover a magnificent collection of emblematic creations, sketches, accessories, and temporary exhibitions that allow you to better understand the artistic universe of Yves Saint Laurent. Even if you’re not a fashion enthusiast, the visit remains very interesting and immersive. I particularly like the calm and elegant atmosphere of the place, which contrasts with the bustling outside atmosphere. The visit takes about an hour, ideal for combining with the Majorelle Garden on the same morning.

My advice: book your ticket online at the same time as the garden ticket to avoid waiting and to get the most out of the experience.

7. Visiting Marrakech by sidecar, an unusual tour

Discovering Marrakech by sidecar is undoubtedly one of the most original experiences I’ve had in the city. Far from the traditional tours, this ride allows you to explore Marrakech in a different way, leaving the usual tourist routes behind to discover more local and authentic neighborhoods. Sitting comfortably in the sidecar, we traverse the medina, the ochre walls, the palm trees, and sometimes even more confidential areas than we would ever think of visiting alone. I particularly enjoyed this experience for the sense of freedom it provides and for the conversations with the driver-guide, who is always passionate about his city and full of anecdotes about the history and daily life in Marrakech. It’s an ideal activity for a first discovery or to see the city from a different angle, whether you travel as a couple, among friends, or even with teenagers as a family. A playful and truly memorable way to discover Marrakech.

8. Fly over the Marrakech region in a hot-air balloon at sunrise

It was the first time I had ever flown in a hot-air balloon… and it was clearly a sensational and unforgettable experience during my stay in Marrakech. The adventure began very early, around 6:30 a.m., when a 4×4 came to pick me up at the roundabout of Place des Ferblantiers, still immersed in the calm of the early morning. After about 40 minutes of driving, I arrived in the middle of the countryside, at the site of Sky of Africa, a company that has been organizing hot-air balloon flights in the region for more than 20 years.

Upon arrival, the welcome is warm with coffee and mint tea before a general briefing on the flight’s progress. I then witness the impressive inflation of the hot air balloons, a moment already magical that heralds the beginning of the experience. It is then time to climb into the large cabin that can accommodate a dozen people, accompanied by a pilot who is both reassuring and extremely professional.

At take-off, the pilot communicates with the other hot-air balloons via walkie-talkie, analyses the weather, wind speed, and trajectory using several electronic instruments. Then suddenly… silence.

Once at an altitude, the sensation is incredible: no noise, only absolute silence. We climb up to about 500 meters of altitude and the view becomes spectacular. On one side, the Atlas Mountains appear on the horizon, on the other, desert landscapes of ochre hues stretch out. The colors gradually evolve until the first rays of the sun appear, rising behind the reliefs. A moment almost unreal, suspended in time.

After about 45 minutes of flight, the landing takes place a few kilometers further away. Throughout the entire experience, the ground teams follow the hot-air balloon in a 4×4 to ensure the recovery and dismantling of the equipment. Back at the base camp, a hearty Berber breakfast awaits us under a traditional tent, followed by the presentation of a flight certificate, a lovely souvenir of this adventure.

The team of Sky of Africa is passionate and perfectly organized, with impeccable performance from start to finish. The price remains quite high — about 200 € per person — but it is clearly a unique experience to live at least once in your life during a trip to Marrakech.

9. Visit the El Badi Palace, a majestic remnant of Marrakech

The El Badi Palace is one of the visits that allow for a better understanding of the fascinating history of Marrakech. Built in the late 16th century by Sultan Ahmed al-Mansour to celebrate a great military victory, this palace was once considered one of the most magnificent in the Arab world, decorated with Italian marble, gold, and precious materials from several continents. Today, only impressive remnants remain, but that is precisely what makes the visit so special: one can easily imagine the place’s past grandeur by strolling through its immense open courtyards surrounded by high ochre walls.

I really enjoy the quieter atmosphere of the palace, away from the hustle and bustle of the souks. As you climb up the walls, you enjoy a very beautiful view of the roofs of Marrakech and the surrounding area, often with storks perched on the walls, which adds even more charm to the site. The visit takes about an hour, ideal for combining with a visit to the Bahia Palace or the Saadian tombs located a few minutes’ walk away.

🎟 Prices and timetables 2026

  • Adult admission (foreign visitors): 100 MAD (about 9–10 €)
  • Children (7 to 13 years old): 30 MAD
  • Open every day from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. (last entry around 16:30)

Tickets are purchased directly at the entrance (bring some cash), although it is now possible to book online for some guided tours.

Visiting the El Badi Palace truly allows you to discover a more historical and authentic side of Marrakech, different from the perfectly restored palaces, but just as fascinating.

10. Visit the Bahia Palace, a masterpiece of Moroccan architecture

The Bahia Palace is undoubtedly one of the most impressive monuments to visit in Marrakech. Built in the late 19th century by the grand vizier Si Moussa and then enlarged by his son Bou Ahmed, the palace aimed to become the most sumptuous in Morocco. Its name, Bahia, which means «the brilliant» or «the beautiful», a name perfectly chosen given the elegant nature of the place.

I especially enjoy strolling through its various courtyards, admiring the colorful mosaics, the carved wooden ceilings, and the indoor gardens that offer a fresh and peaceful respite in the heart of the medina. Each room reveals a new architectural detail, between traditional tiles, finely crafted stuccos, and magnificent lighting effects. Unlike the El Badi Palace, everything here is refined and delicate, which makes it easy to imagine the courtiers’ daily life at the time.

The visit is pleasant and accessible, ideal even with children, as you can move freely between the courtyards and gardens. It takes about 45 minutes to an hour to fully enjoy the place.

🎟 Prices and timetables 2026

  • Adult admission (foreign visitors): 100 MAD (≈ 9–10 €)
  • Children (7 to 13 years old): 30 MAD
  • Open every day from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Tickets are purchased directly at the entrance and it is advisable to arrive early in the morning to avoid the crowds, as the palace is one of the most visited sites in Marrakech.

The Bahia Palace remains for me a must-see visit to understand the elegance and refinement of traditional Moroccan architecture.

11. Discover Moroccan gastronomy in Marrakech

Discovering Marrakech is also about traveling through its cuisine, which is generous, fragrant, and deeply rooted in Moroccan culture. Throughout my stays, I like to alternate between small local establishments and more refined experiences, because it is really this contrast that makes culinary discovery so rich.

I like to start my day simply, by enjoying a msemmen still warm in the small streets around the Pâtisserie des Princes, a stone’s throw from Jemaa el-Fna square. I often take the time to stop in the small shops of the medina to buy some bread just out of the oven, of, from Beignets still hot or a few Moroccan cakes sold by street vendors. These simple moments are among my favorites: observing local life and tasting authentic, spontaneous cuisine full of flavors.

For a more gastronomic experience, I tried it in January 2026 the Experience menu Restaurant Le Salama offered to 600 dirhams per person. This tasting menu allows you to discover several Moroccan specialties revisited in an elegant setting with a superb view from the rooftop. A very beautiful address for an evening in Marrakech.

Another experience I loved: participating in a Moroccan cooking class at Riad XO, where we start by going grocery shopping in the neighborhood with the chef before cooking a traditional tajine together. A friendly and authentic immersion in Moroccan culture.

If you have some time — and especially patience — I also recommend the experience of Bacha Coffee, Considered one of the most beautiful cafés in Marrakech. The wait can sometimes reach 1h30 to 2h, but the place offers a real suspended moment in a spectacular setting.

For a more elegant break, I was lucky enough to try two iconic afternoon teas from the city.
And January 2025, I discovered the Pierre Hermé Sweet Tea Time at La Mamounia, proposed to 580 dirhams for two people, including hot drinks, pastries from Pierre Hermé Paris, scones, jams and refined sweets in an absolutely mythical setting.

I also tested it in January 2025 the Signature Tea Time by Hélène Darroze at the Royal Mansour, At 550 dirhams per person. The experience is exceptional: a selection of refined sandwiches, a choice of pastries, a trolley of homemade sweets, scones, jams, exceptional teas and fresh juices served in an atmosphere of incredible elegance. A truly timeless moment.

In Marrakech, every meal ultimately becomes a complete experience, combining local traditions, refined cuisine, and the Moroccan way of life.

12. Shopping in Marrakech: my ideas for souvenirs to bring home

Shopping in Marrakech is definitely one of my favorite activities. It’s impossible for me to leave the city without bringing back some souvenirs from the trip. With traditional crafts, decorative items, and more contemporary creations inspired by Moroccan craftsmanship, there’s truly something for everyone and every budget.

Walking through the souks of the medina is already an experience in itself. You’ll find a thousand and one little wonders: bakchous, tea services, handmade tableware, lanterns, textiles, and decorative objects. I especially enjoy observing the evolution of Moroccan craftsmanship, which now blends ancestral traditions with more modern designs while maintaining a genuine local artisanal work.

One important tip: haggling is part of Moroccan culture, but it should still be a pleasant experience. There’s no need to absolutely seek the lowest possible price. Personally, I always buy at the price I consider fair. If an agreement can’t be reached, it’s not a big deal — the main thing is that the exchange remains respectful and friendly.

What memories to bring back from Marrakech?

🌶 Spices
Head towards the famous Place des Épices, one of my favorite places in the medina. When you face the Café des Épices, the shop run by Aziz is located on the left. There you will find a wide selection of aromatic spices and typical Moroccan blends.

🧺 Personalized baskets and items
On the Place des Épices, you will find beautiful Custom embroidered baskets (about 10 €) as well as Multicolored woven pots with conical lid Around 6 €. These are practical and authentic souvenirs that I love to bring back.

🧶 Moroccan craftsmanship in tranquility
If you prefer to shop away from the hustle and bustle of the souks, I recommend the’Artisan Collective, Located at the intersection of El Adala Street and Avenue Mohammed V, you can see artisans working directly on site and buy carpets, quilts, headwear or wooden, leather or metal objects in a more peaceful atmosphere.

🌿 Argan oil
Another must-have: argan oil, which can be purchased in cooperatives run by women in the medina or elsewhere in Morocco. A great way to support local craftsmanship while also bringing home a typical product.

Bringing a souvenir from Marrakech is ultimately not just about buying an object; it’s also about prolonging the journey a little once you’re back home.

13. Relaxing in Marrakech: Hammam and massage, an essential experience

After a day of walking through the souks and exploring the medina, indulging in a moment of relaxation in a hammam is an integral part of the Moroccan experience. The hammam is more than just a spa: it is a true ancestral ritual deeply rooted in local culture.

In Marrakech, you can choose from several experiences according to your preferences. The public hammams, Popular with the Moroccans themselves, these places offer an authentic immersion in local life. The atmosphere is simple and traditional, ideal for discovering the ritual of black soap and hand-scrubbing with the kessa glove in its most authentic version.

For a more comfortable experience, Marrakech is also home to private spas and more luxurious addresses. I especially tested the Mythic Oriental Spa In 2017, a very beautiful discovery with a soothing atmosphere and high-quality treatments, perfect for a real wellness break after several days of sightseeing.

Another absolutely incredible souvenir: the Royal Mansour spa, Which I had the chance to discover in 2015. The place is simply spectacular, considered one of the most beautiful spas in the world. The architecture, the light, the tranquility, and the quality of the treatments make the experience completely timeless. An exceptional moment to live at least once if you want to treat yourself to a luxurious getaway in Marrakech.

Finally, what I particularly appreciate about Marrakech is the spas integrated directly into the riads. More intimate, often beautifully decorated, they allow you to enjoy a massage or a hammam in a calm and welcoming atmosphere, without even leaving your accommodation. An ideal option to relax at the end of the day.

Whether you choose a traditional hammam, an elegant spa, or one of your riads, taking the time to slow down is an integral part of traveling in Marrakech.

14. Spending a day in the desert of Agafay is an essential experience near Marrakech

Just an hour from Marrakech, the desert of Agafay offers a completely different setting from the medina: a lunar-like landscape of calm and serenity, perfect for escaping for a day or a night. It is clearly one of the experiences I recommend most during a stay in Marrakech.

During my last trip, I discovered Alkamar Camp Agafay, A place I particularly loved for its elegant and immersive atmosphere in the middle of the desert. I spent an incredible night there, with spectacular sunsets, a private pool, and a spectacular dinner under the stars.
👉 I tell my entire experience in my dedicated article

Even without sleeping there, the camp offers Day Pool formulas, Perfect for enjoying the pool and the exceptional setting for a day, as well as the magical evenings in the desert, With dinner and a musical atmosphere at sunset. An excellent alternative to experience the desert without leaving Marrakech for too long.

One of Alkamar Camp’s big strengths is the variety of activities offered directly on site, all of which can be easily organized via WhatsApp with the camp team, making the experience particularly smooth.

👉 Find the full details in my article dedicated to the activities:
Things to do at Alkamar Camp: fully experiencing the desert of Agafay

Among the possible experiments:

  • 🏍️ Quad or buggy with guide, To explore the desert tracks and admire the panoramas around the camp
  • 🐪 Camelback or horseback ride, Ideal at sunset when the light becomes golden
  • 🧘 Wellness moments, With relaxing massages or yoga sessions in the desert
  • 🚴‍♂️ Nature experiences, Like mountain biking, observing the stars with an astronomer or even taking a hot-air balloon flight

Observing the starry sky in the desert of Agafay is also one of my most memorable memories: far from any light pollution, the stars seem infinite.

Whether for a day trip, an evening or a full night, the desert of Agafay brings a completely different dimension to a trip to Marrakech.

15. Go on a discovery tour of the Ourika Valley with GetYourGuide

During our stay in Marrakech, we also chose to leave the city for a day to discover the city. Ourika Valley, Located in the Atlas Mountains, about an hour’s drive away. It’s a perfect excursion to see another side of Morocco, more natural and authentic, away from the hustle and bustle of the medina.

We booked this tour via GetYourGuide, A very convenient solution when you don’t want to organize the transportation yourself. Everything was simple and well organized: pickup directly in Marrakech, comfortable transportation in a small group, and guidance by a local guide throughout the day.

The route passes through beautiful landscapes, between Berber villages, terraced crops, and mountain panoramas. On the spot, we were able to stroll along the river, discover local handicrafts, and enjoy a lunch with a view of the mountains. The atmosphere is much cooler and more peaceful than in Marrakech, which is really refreshing after several days in the city.

This excursion is ideal if you’re staying in Marrakech for several days and want to diversify your experiences without going too far. It’s also an accessible outing for families, perfect for discovering another facet of Morocco in one day.

👉 A very beautiful nature break that I recommend to complement a stay in Marrakech.

What I particularly love about Marrakech is the unique balance between excitement and serenity: going from a lively souk to a peaceful patio, from mint tea in the medina to afternoon tea in a mythical palace, or from a cultural day to a nature break in the desert or the Ourika valley.
