A great weekend on the Belgian coast in Knokke
When we were offered the chance to discover Knokke-Heist on the Belgian coast, I must admit that we were a bit skeptical.
In my mind, Knokke was mostly associated with beautiful cars, chic boutiques, and the immense villas of Zoute. I really didn’t know what to expect.
And then we left.
Within a few hours, our prejudices completely disappeared.
We discovered a seaside resort full of contrasts: an immense beach of fine sand, a long embankment facing the North Sea, beautiful houses, beautiful cycling trails, protected natural spaces, and above all an atmosphere that I didn’t necessarily expect to find here.
For three days, we cycled through Knokke and its surroundings, discovered the Zoute neighborhood, enjoyed the sunsets, tried Belgian specialties, and took a getaway to De Haan.
So, what to do in Knokke during a weekend? Here’s everything we discovered during our stay.
How to get to Knokke?
During our stay, we left Nice to fly to Brussels.
From Brussels, we then took the train to get to Knokke. The journey took us about 1h30 and we arrived in the late afternoon.
It was a rather convenient solution for getting to the Belgian coast without having to rent a car.
To consult the schedules and plan your journey, remember to check the connections offered by the SNCB.
Once on the coast, the coastal tram also makes it easy to reach various seaside resorts.
In fact, that was the solution we chose for our getaway in De Haan.
Renting a bike in Knokke
Once our suitcases were placed in the hotel, we rented two bicycles.
And this is really the mode of transport I recommend for discovering Knokke and its surroundings.
We loved being able to move freely without having to look for a parking spot, and especially taking the time to stop whenever something caught our attention.
There are many bike rental companies in Knokke.
If you are traveling with family or friends, you can also find rental go-karts or go-carts.
With children, it’s a rather playful way to discover the coast.
What to do in Knokke for a weekend?
1. Walk along the Knokke embankment
As soon as we arrived, we headed towards the embankment.
This long walk runs along the beach and offers a magnificent view of the North Sea.
After the journey from Nice, what a joy to finally get some fresh air!
We especially enjoyed taking a walk there at the end of the day. During our stay, we were lucky enough to witness beautiful sunsets.
The light over the sea was absolutely beautiful.
It’s a very simple walk, but it’s probably one of the first things I recommend you do when you arrive in Knokke.
Take the time to walk around, look at the facades, stop for a drink and above all, enjoy the sea air.
2. Enjoy the beach
The North Sea may not be the first destination that comes to mind when thinking of swimming!
Especially when we were there at the beginning of October…
But the beach of Knokke offers much more than just swimming.
Depending on the season and the conditions, it is possible to practice various nautical and sports activities: sailing, kite surfing, catamaran, windsurfing or even horseback riding.
And for those who prefer to simply enjoy the scenery, the beach bars provide a comfortable place to sit facing the sea.
Some places even give the beach a very chic and summer-like atmosphere.
At certain moments, I’ll admit that I almost had the impression of being on the Côte d’Azur!
3. Discovering Zoute by bike
The Zoute neighborhood was one of my big favorites during this trip.
We loved getting lost in the small streets on our bikes and discovering the beautiful houses that line the residential neighborhoods.
The properties are impressive, the gardens are perfectly maintained and the architecture has a great deal of charm.
This walk also reminded me of some of my family getaways in Touquet.
I really advise you not to try to follow a specific itinerary.
Take your bike and just wander the streets.
That’s often how the most beautiful discoveries are made.
4. Admire the traditional houses
The houses of Zoute really deserve a little time to be dedicated to them.
We spent hours quietly pedaling, taking photos, and admiring the facades.
This is a part of Knokke that I didn’t necessarily imagine before leaving.
And of course, we also had the curiosity to look at the real estate prices…
Just to warn you: some of the houses are completely out of our budget!
We are talking about properties worth several million euros.
So we preferred to admire them on bicycles.
5. Stop at the Royal Zoute Golf Club
During our bike ride, we also stopped at the Royal Zoute Golf Club.
Even if you’re not particularly passionate about golf, the setting is worth a look.
We particularly liked the clubhouse and its traditional architecture, as well as the natural surroundings that surround it.
This is a pleasant addition to a walk in the Zoute.
6. Discovering the Zwin Nature Reserve
If you want to completely change your surroundings, head to Zwin.
This nature reserve is located near Knokke, near the Dutch border.
We then leave the chic atmosphere of Zoute to find vast natural spaces.
The Zwin is known for its migratory birds and its landscapes of dunes, salt marshes and wetlands.
During our stay, unfortunately we did not have enough time to visit the reserve as we would have liked.
We mainly stayed near the site, but that made us want to come back.
If you love nature, plan accordingly for this step.
And if you come as a family, don’t forget to bring binoculars: bird watching can be a fun activity to do with the children.
7. Take a getaway to De Haan
If you spend several days on the Belgian coast, I really recommend you plan a getaway to De Haan.
We had discovered several photos of this small town on Instagram and we immediately wanted to visit it.
Originally, we thought we would go there by bike along the coast.
Finally, we chose another solution: taking the coastal tram with our bikes.
In about 30 minutes, we were in De Haan.
And we really enjoyed this little getaway.
I found De Haan much more family-friendly and a bit less sophisticated than Knokke.
The architecture is also different, with beautiful traditional houses and a much quieter atmosphere.
We especially enjoyed walking through the streets and discovering the beach.
If you are traveling with your family, I find that De Haan is a very good excursion from Knokke.
The Zoute Grand Prix: beautiful cars invade Knokke
During our stay, we were lucky enough to be in Knokke at the time of the Zoute Grand Prix.
If you love old cars, collector cars and beautiful models of automobiles, you will definitely appreciate the atmosphere.
For several days, the cars parade through the streets of Knokke and along the dike.
We were able to admire beautiful cars and enjoy a really special atmosphere throughout the city.
It was one of the events that most affected us during our stay.
If you love cars, this can therefore be a good reason to plan your weekend in Knokke at this time of year.
The culinary specialties to try in Knokke
You’re starting to get to know me: it’s impossible for me to visit a destination without trying the local specialties!
And in Belgium, there is obviously plenty to do.
During your stay, you can, among other things, try:
- the fried mussels; ;
- the Belgian fries; ;
- the waffles; ;
- chocolate; ;
- the Belgian beer; ;
- the shrimp croquettes; ;
- the cheese croquettes.
We discovered the shrimp croquettes and the cheese croquettes during this stay.
And frankly, what a pleasant surprise!
My best foodie addresses in Knokke
The Glacier of the Post Office
If you feel like having an ice cream or a waffle during your walk along the embankment, I recommend you keep this address in mind.
The Glacier de la Poste was one of our favorites during our stay.
Address: Zeedijk-Het Zoute 718, Knokke
This is exactly the kind of place I like to stop in on my travels: a small bite to eat between two walks.
Marie Siska
Another atmosphere at Marie Siska.
This historic address in Zoute is known for its waffles, among other things.
The establishment is located in the residential district of Zoute, which makes it easy to combine a delicious meal with a stroll through the beautiful houses of the area.
The setting is more chic and the prices are also higher, but the address is worth a visit if you want to try a waffle in an emblematic spot in Knokke.

Knokke with the family
Although Knokke has a rather chic image, I think the destination is perfectly suited for a family holiday.
The beach allows children to enjoy large open spaces, the bicycle makes getting around easier, and the coastal tram makes it easy to explore the other seaside resorts.
The Zwin can also be interesting for a day more focused on nature.
And then there are the ice creams, the waffles and the fries…
It's hard to make it any simpler to convince children!
My tips for visiting Knokke
Rent bicycles. This is really the best way to discover Knokke and the Zoute at your own pace.
Plan to bring a small jacket, Even when the weather seems pleasant. The wind from the North Sea can quickly cool the atmosphere.
Take the time to get lost in Zoute. It was precisely by going off the main roads that we discovered the most beautiful houses.
Save an evening for the sunset. The light on the sea is beautiful.
Plan an excursion to De Haan if you stay for three days or more.
Don’t overlook Belgian gastronomy. Moules-frites, shrimp croquettes, waffles, chocolate… You’re in Belgium, take advantage of it!
So, did I like Knokke?
To be honest, I didn’t really know what to think about Knokke before going there.
And finally, this weekend really surprised us.
We loved the beach, the bike rides, the sunsets, and especially the contrast between the very chic atmosphere of Zoute and the much more wild landscapes of Zwin.
I also really enjoyed discovering De Haan, which is much more family-friendly and peaceful.
Knokke is ultimately a destination full of contrasts, and that’s probably what I liked the most.
You can go from the beach to a bike ride through the small streets of Zoute, admire beautiful houses, then go a few kilometers further to discover nature.
And of course, between two walks, there’s always a good reason to stop for a waffle!

Knokke is a fairly large resort and the choice of neighborhood can really change the experience of your stay. For a weekend, I recommend prioritizing a hotel located in the center or on the side of Zoute, So that you can easily reach the beach, the restaurants and the main shopping streets on foot or by bike.
Sleeping in the center of Knokke
The center of Knokke is particularly convenient for a family vacation. There are many restaurants, shops, and hotels there, and the beach is still easily accessible on foot.
Among the addresses that can be viewed are, among others:
- Hotel Britannia, an elegant address located on the Elizabetlaan, a few minutes from the beach.

Knokke is particularly well suited to this type of stay: the distances remain reasonable and the seaside walk is perfect for families. You can easily alternate between the beach, cycling, ice cream, restaurants and walks without having to get back in the car every hour.
My advice: If you are only staying for two or three days, choose a hotel in the center of Knokke or in Zoute. You will enjoy the atmosphere of the resort much more and will be able to easily go exploring the Belgian coast by bike.

The Belgian coast has nothing to envy to the south of France! There reigns a crazy charm, and even though the architecture isn’t always up to par, I love the atmospheres of the tea rooms and other cafes that line the coast…
What a beautiful place! We wanted to visit it last year when we visited Bruges, but it was raining so much that we couldn’t see anything!
It looks like a really nice place! I was once in Belgium; I really loved Bruges and Ghent; I would love to go back and discover other places there 🙂
Belgium and one of its cities like I had never seen before. Thank you for this very interesting article. The authenticity of this city really gives you a desire to visit and your photos are beautiful! See you soon.
