Sensorial expedition at the Mercat de la Boqueria

Ah, the famous typical markets of Barcelona… I heard a lot about them before leaving, and I was told that it was impossible to leave Barcelona without visiting them to discover these places full of life, colors, scents, and flavors, where you can find the best local specialties. The most famous (and touristy) remains the Boqueria market

In every neighborhood of Barcelona you will find its market., a lively and vibrant place where one can to savor the best fruits and vegetables, the The best charcuterie shops, The best local cheeses. Just thinking about it makes my mouth water. Due to lack of time, we only did the most famous one, which is located on the main promenade: MErcat de la Boqueria. As you might expect, it’s a lively place but the atmosphere is great. Barcelonians, tourists and schoolchildren stroll through the many colorful aisles. The stands are beautiful and well-displayed with a great variety of products. Perfect presentation of fruits and vegetables.

Go there early in the morning without having breakfast; you can have it on the spot. You can enjoy fruit juices, fresh smoothies, delicious fruits, a wide variety of hams and cheeses. You can also sit down at the counter of a tapas bar located in the middle of the market between two stands.

As in all places with crowds that attract tourists, keep an eye on your belongings; pickpockets can be a problem…

If you want to discover more authentic markets that are less popular with tourists, visit the new Santa Caterina covered market located in the Ribera neighborhood in the Ciutat Vella. This magnificent market was renovated in 2005 while retaining a local feel with its ceramic roof that recalls a certain Antonio Gaudi.

Don’t miss the San Antoni food market either, the largest of them all, which looks like the Boqueria market, minus the tourists! It is located in the Ronda Sant Pau neighborhood (Carrer Comte d’Urgell, metro San Antoni).

Every first Friday and Saturday of the month, you can visit the Fira Artesana market, better known as the honey market, where local producers gather to sell their products and Catalan specialties made with honey. It is located in Plaça del Pi (Liceu metro station).

These markets with their many scents, colors, and smiles of the vendors will mark every visitor’s visit in search of local flavors and will transform a simple morning stroll into a true sensory experience. Take the opportunity to do some shopping to treat yourself. Memorable picnic in the Güell Park if the sun is out. But anyway, we're in Barcelona, the weather is always nice all year round!     I remember leaving with a huge bag of cherries, but you have to go into the aisles further back and not stay at the display – beautiful – but out of the price of admission.

  • 1€ for a fresh fruit salad is frankly not cheap when you consider the price we pay in organic snack bars or similar places…
