New Year is a time I particularly enjoy for city trips. The cities are illuminated, the atmosphere is festive, the Christmas markets are still there and you can easily spend a few days of relaxation without having to travel very far.
Throughout my travels, I had the opportunity to discover several European cities during that time. Some are perfect for partying, others for enjoying their atmosphere, their gastronomy, or simply for experiencing a different New Year’s Eve.

Museums, trendy neighborhoods, markets, restaurants, thrift shops, street art… there is plenty to do during the day before enjoying the atmosphere of December 31st.

For a more original evening, especially suited to a family stay, the Roncalli Christmas Circus It will also be installed in Berlin during the holidays, from December 17, 2026, to January 3, 2027. A good idea to enjoy a show before continuing the evening.

🇬🇧 London
And of course… London! ❤️
You are starting to get to know me: England is the country I know best after France and London is a city where I have been going back regularly since I was a teenager.
So of course, when it comes to choosing a destination for New Year’s, London was one of my first ideas.
The British capital has that little something magical during the holidays: the illuminations, the Christmas decorations, the windows, the markets, the musicals, and that special atmosphere that I love so much.
And on December 31st, London clearly takes things to the next level!
🎆 The famous London fireworks
That’s obviously the big must-see event of New Year's Eve in London.
At midnight, the famous «bongs» of Big Ben they resonate before giving way to the grand fireworks organized around London Eye and the Thames. For the 2026 New Year’s Eve, the event is scheduled for 31 December 2026 and will be available for reservation.
It’s an absolutely incredible show to experience, but beware: The seats are paid for and very in demand. The event is organized with a ticketing system to manage the crowd and security.
If you really want to experience the New Year’s Eve atmosphere at the heart of the event, you’ll need to make reservations in advance.
🚢 See the fireworks from the Thames
Another option that I love: take a cruise on the Thames on the evening of December 31st.
Several cruises are offered for New Year’s Eve 2026, with dinner, music, entertainment and, above all, an exceptional view of the illuminated London and the fireworks at midnight.
Obviously, it’s a more substantial budget than a typical evening out, but to make a splash, it’s an experience that can be really enjoyable.
✨ And what if you don't necessarily want to party?
That’s what I like about London too: You can have a very different New Year's Eve depending on your preferences.
You can start your day with a walk in London and enjoy the latest Christmas illuminations, do some shopping, visit a museum or attend a musical in the West End.
The Winter Wonderland at Hyde Park It will also be open until January 3, 2027, allowing you to still enjoy the Christmas atmosphere a little longer before the New Year.
And for families, London also offers many shows and activities during the holidays. Visit London recommends, in particular, West End shows, Christmas pantomimes, skating rinks, and the illuminations.
🍽️ Dinner, rooftop or festive evening
If you prefer to avoid the crowds of the fireworks, London also has plenty of restaurants, rooftops, and special evenings for December 31st.
Among the options currently being considered for 2026 are, among others: Horizon 22, with an evening offering a panoramic view of London, Madison with its view of St Paul’s Cathedral, or evenings with dinner and music in various restaurants in the capital.
The Southbank Centre It also includes a big New Year’s Eve party at the Royal Festival Hall, with several festive spaces, live music and entertainment.

We can go there. as a couple, among friends or as a family, Spend several days exploring the city and end the year with a spectacular fireworks display on the banks of the Thames.
And then, unlike some destinations where the New Year’s Eve represents almost the entire experience, London allows you to fully enjoy the days around December 31st.

🇪🇸 Barcelona
And what if for you New Year means sun, tapas and a Mediterranean atmosphere, Go to Barcelona! ☀️🇪🇸
I really like the idea of spending a few days in Barcelona at this time of year. Although the temperatures are obviously not those of summer, the climate is generally much milder than in cities in northern Europe and still allows you to enjoy the terraces, walks and the city without being wrapped in three sweaters.
And above all, Barcelona knows how to party!
🎆 The New Year’s Eve on Avenida Reina Maria Cristina
To experience New Year's Eve like the Barcelonians, head to... Avinguda Reina Maria Cristina, at the foot of Montjuïc, where the crowd gathers to celebrate the passage into the new year.
At midnight, it's time for an essential Spanish tradition: the 12 grapes 🍇, One raisin for every bell to start the year on the best possible terms.
The evening continues with music, entertainment and pyrotechnic show, in a particularly festive atmosphere.
That’s actually what I love about New Year’s Eve in Barcelona: unlike a night spent locked in a nightclub, you can really enjoy yourself. the atmosphere of the city and the open-air festivities.
🏃 The Race of the Noses
If you are in Barcelona on December 31st and you like sports, you can also attend or participate in the The Race of the Noses, a popular 10 km race traditionally held on the last day of the year.
His name comes from Home of the Nassos, a traditional Catalan character who has as many noses as there are days in the year.
It’s a rather original attraction to discover, especially if you’re traveling with your family, because it allows you to see another side of local traditions before the New Year.
🌴 And during the day?
The advantage of Barcelona is that you don’t just come here for December 31st.
You can take the day to stroll around the Barri Gòtic, discover the works of Gaudí, You can admire the Sagrada Família, stroll along the Ramblas or climb up to the top of the Cathedral. Park Güell.
And of course, it’s impossible to come to Barcelona without planning some delicious breaks!
Tapas, paella, churros, hot chocolate… gastronomy is an integral part of the trip.
During the holidays, Barcelona also preserves its illuminations and its Christmas markets, including the Santa Llúcia Fair in front of the cathedral.
🎉 And after midnight?
If you still have energy after twelve o’clock at night, Barcelona obviously has a very lively nightlife.
Restaurants, bars, clubs and special New Year's Eve events take over. The waterfront is particularly known for its many restaurants, bars and festive establishments.
For a quieter evening, you can also simply book one restaurant with New Year's Eve dinner, Then join the outside atmosphere at midnight.
❤️ Why choose Barcelona for New Year’s Eve?
For me, Barcelona is the ideal destination if you want to combine city trips, gastronomy, architecture and celebration, Without necessarily spending your entire stay partying.
The city also works very well for A family trip You can visit in the morning, have tapas for lunch, enjoy the neighborhoods and the illuminations in the afternoon, and then participate in the New Year’s festivities in the evening.
And then you have to admit it: starting the year with tapas, cava, 12 raisins and a fireworks display in Montjuïc, That’s actually pretty cool! 🍇🎆
👉 To choose if you like it: the sun, gastronomy, architecture, traditions, Mediterranean atmospheres and city trips with the family.
