A mini cruise from Copenhagen to Oslo along the fjords
Last November we went for a Great weekend in Copenhagen And we took the opportunity to take a cruise from Copenhagen to Oslo with the DFDS company. More than just a twelve-hour overnight crossing, it is also, above all, a beautiful cruise aboard a comfortable ferry that has many advantages to make your experience a truly memorable one.
On board the DFDS ferry
Copenhagen, it’s 4 p.m., the ship is leaving the capital’s harbor and the Danish coast to head north towards Oslo. We take advantage of the departure and the scenery that unfolds from the upper deck. Now we’re off, and we’re off to discover this giant of the seas. Before this mini-cruise, we expected to just take a ferry ride on some old-fashioned cabins and a self-service restaurant, and at most a small bar… But no, as they say, you shouldn’t be fooled by preconceptions! This is indeed a real cruise ship, where you can relax and enjoy all the entertainment and quality services on board!
The ferry has a little over 600 cabins on different levels, from the standard (90€) to the high-end cabin (400€). There is something for everyone on every budget. You can enjoy delicious dishes in the 6 restaurants on board, which offer a wide variety of specialties in a modern and elegant setting. Excellent service and high-quality dishes with beautiful presentation.
After dinner, there are a multitude of options for extending the evening. Whether you want to have fun, have a good time, party, or simply relax, there is something for everyone. You can have a beer in the Irish pub and listen to the musicians play, attend a concert in the concert hall, let off steam on the dance floor of the nightclub, shop in a large duty-free store, relax in one of the heated swimming pools of the Bubble Zone, play in the casino, or even take a car race in a video game simulator! You really can find your bliss…
Arriving in Oslo
Early in the morning, the light of day is visible through the cabin, and even before we have had breakfast, we rush up to the upper deck to admire the Norwegian coast (the fjords) and to enjoy the magnificent scenery that unfolds before our astonished eyes… The sea is calm, the forests are multicolored at this autumn time, we see those beautiful fishermen’s houses… What a spectacle!
We then enjoy our hearty breakfast, a wide choice of sweet and savory items with a variety of fruit juices, yogurts, cereals, breads, etc… In short, a feast that gets us going for this beautiful day exploring Oslo.
A little more than an hour later, we are finally arriving in Oslo port, and the slight fog gives way to a beautiful clear sky. The ferry port is located only about fifteen minutes on foot from the city center of Oslo. Once in town, we went to book seats for a 2-hour boat tour in the Oslo Bay aboard an old sailboat with the company FJORD SIGHTSEEING. The price is 269 NOK, or 28€ per person, and departures take place at 10:30, 13:00 and 15:30. We have our tickets ready for the 13:00 departure, so we have the whole morning to enjoy the capital and fly over its main attractions.
We start with a free visit to the famous Nobel Prize Center, a powerful and intense moment. The opportunity to learn more about the many laureates and their work. We then stroll along the harbor in Aker Brygge, a lively and friendly neighborhood where you’ll find many bars and restaurants, as well as beautiful modern buildings, some of which are in an industrial style. The ideal place to enjoy the local atmosphere!
Next, we head to the grand boulevard Karl Johans Gate, the central artery of the city, where you’ll find many shops and beautiful colorful buildings. We then cross the small green park of Spikersuppa to head to the Royal Palace and stroll through its gardens. We know very well that we won’t be able to see everything in Oslo in one day, so there’s no need to rush; we take our time, and we make the most of it!
It’s almost 13:00, we head back to the pier where this beautiful sailboat is docked to discover Oslo Bay and its islands. 2 hours of rest… We pass by the Oslo Opera House, known for its bold and contemporary architecture, then we sail away from the city to admire these magnificent landscapes and observe these beautiful colorful fishing houses. A postcard-perfect setting. Surely the best activity in Oslo, highly recommended!
And here we are, already 16:00, and it’s time to get back on board the DFDS ferry for the return journey to Copenhagen by night-time crossing. Once again we enjoy this magnificent sunset, the memories are flooding our minds, and a little disappointed that we didn’t stay longer.
